On December 22, 2023, the 78th United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution to designate the Spring Festival (Lunar New Year) as a United Nations holiday.
Dai Bing, Charge d'Affaires of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations, said after the adoption of the UN General Assembly resolution that China's promotion of the Spring Festival as a United Nations holiday is a pragmatic action to implement global civilization initiatives and advocate respect for the diversity of world civilizations. The Spring Festival has officially become a United Nations holiday, which fully demonstrates the communication and influence of Chinese civilization. It will effectively promote exchanges and mutual learning among different civilizations in the world, and actively embody the cultural values ​​of diversity and inclusiveness advocated by the United Nations. The United Nations General Assembly resolved to designate the Spring Festival as a United Nations holiday, and received warm welcome and enthusiastic support from United Nations member states and staff of the United Nations Secretariat.
In addition to important statutory holidays of the host country, the United Nations can pass a resolution through the General Assembly to designate festivals widely celebrated around the world as United Nations holidays, and try to avoid arranging meeting activities on that day. The Secretary-General of the United Nations issues a congratulatory message every year during the Spring Festival, extending holiday greetings and blessings to China and all people of all countries who celebrate the Spring Festival (Lunar New Year).
As a traditional Chinese folk festival, the Spring Festival symbolizes the reunion of the Min family, bidding farewell to the old and welcoming the new. At the same time, the Spring Festival is also deeply loved by people around the world. In many countries around the world, the Spring Festival has "official status."
