Nepal flood highlights growing risk of glacier disasters in the Alps

Authorities in Nepal suspect that the recent devastating flash flood was triggered by a glacial lake outburst or a glacier collapse in the Himalayas - something experts say could also threaten the Alps.

A torrent of water, mud and debris surged almost 170 kilometres through southwest Tibet and into central Nepal earlier this week, killing hundreds of people.

Such disasters are also possible in Europe, particularly in the Alps, explains glaciologist Olaf Eisen, a professor at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research and at the University of Bremen.

As an example, Eisen cites an incident in the Swiss village of Blatten in May 2025, where a rock and glacier collapse occurred. The village had been evacuated beforehand, but a 64-year-old man was killed.

However, Eisen considers it unlikely that such an event in the Alps could reach the same scale as in Nepal. 

"The disaster in Nepal was, in terms of the volume of the avalanche, around 10 to 20 times larger than Blatten, according to current estimates," Eisen said.

"Europe is among the continents warming the fastest, driven by human-made climate change. Rapidly retreating glaciers and thawing permafrost are destabilising high mountain regions," he added.

The areas most at risk are those at about 2,500 to 3,000 metres, including parts of France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland. 

"In combination with extreme weather events such as heatwaves or heavy rainfall, similar natural disasters are becoming more likely there too," Eisen continued.

Risk of glacier collapse in Switzerland

Around 1,000 glaciers have disappeared in Switzerland since 1850. In total, an area of about 1,000 square kilometres has lost its ice cover, according to SRF. 

One glacier that has been monitored for years is Weisshorn East, which saw three small glacier collapses earlier this week.

"This glacier has been monitored for years and there are repeated movements – sometimes more, sometimes less," Frederic Imboden, the mayor of Randa, the municipality bordering the glacier, told SRF.

Several hundred thousand cubic metres could potentially break away from the glacier. While there is no danger for local residents at present, according to Imboden, hiking trails and cycling routes have nevertheless been closed.

Causes of glacier collapses

There are several causes of glacier collapses: on the one hand they can be normal, cyclical processes, Eisen told Euronews. 

Increasingly, though, they are being driven by human-induced climate change.

The situation is particularly critical in regions that have historically remained permanently below freezing. 

These contain so-called permafrost, ice that has stayed frozen continuously for at least two years. 

"As temperatures rise, permafrost begins to thaw and a glacier starts to melt at its base. As a result, it no longer 'sticks' as firmly to the ground," Eisen says.

"In some cases, the formation of a pocket of water has been observed beneath a glacier that was still frozen at its snout," he continued.

During heatwaves or rainfall, this pocket can exert such intense pressure that the still-frozen front of the glacier gives way. 

That would then cause the entire ice mass to be released in one go, Eisen explains.

Such an incident occurred in 2022 on Italy's Marmolada glacier in the Dolomites, when a huge block of ice broke away from the glacier, killing 11 mountaineers.

"Climate protection is glacier protection. Every tenth of a degree less counts. If average temperatures were to fall again, glaciers could adapt and grow," Eisen says. 

Mechanical protection would only have a short-lived effect and is used solely in certain ski areas, requiring a great deal of energy and labour.

馬斯克指出,目前全球AI發展的瓶頸已從晶片偏向電力與冷卻系統,這可能成為中國彎道超車的機會。

他表示,當前AI的發展仍局限在數位領域,但當這種數位智慧,和機器人結合時,將創造幾乎無窮無盡的勞動力,進而誕生出「半無限經濟體」,商品與服務的產出量將迎來爆炸性成長。

而在這樣的半無限經濟體中,馬斯克預測:「2036年,貨幣將不再重要。」他接著解釋,如果機器人與AI提供的商品和服務,多到超過任何人所能消費的程度,「那種情況下,還需要貨幣做什麼?」

在馬斯克設想的商品與服務極度充裕情境下,貨幣的重要性可能隨之下降。並且未來人類的工作不再是為了生存,而是為了創造人與人之間的連結、樂趣與獨特的手作溫度,就像在超市可以買到乾淨便宜的蔬菜,但人們依然能基於興趣在自家後院種番茄。

但要實現這樣的世界,需要比現在更先進的AI技術與龐大運算能力。馬斯克認為,電力與冷卻系統會成為西方世界發展AI技術的瓶頸。他提到,AI技術正以一週為單位飛速突破,幾乎每週都有令人驚豔的新進展。

隨著運算需求呈現指數級增長,AI資料中心對能源的消耗極其驚人。馬斯克直言,在中國以外的地區,AI晶片的生產速度已經超越了新電力設施上線的速度,這也代表著,西方即使擁有再多先進的AI晶片,最終都會因為能源限制而面臨算力擴張的瓶頸。

相較之下,中國在能源基礎設施擁有巨大優勢,「中國目前的發電量已經超過了美國、歐洲和印度的總和,我推測未來將朝向美國發電量的四倍邁進。」馬斯克表示。

中國可能將突圍半導體封鎖

並且在半導體出口管制的當下,中國難以取得先進AI晶片,馬斯克觀察到,中國企業正因此變得更加精明,極度高效地利用現有資源。

馬斯克認為,在先進晶片供應受限下,中國業者正更有效率地運用既有算力。他以Moonshot AI推出的新模型Kimi K3為例,稱其能力已相當接近Anthropic的Claude Fable 5;不過在他看來,Fable 5仍是當時最聰明的模型。

同時馬斯克透露:「中國比多數人想像的更接近解決微影技術問題,這將使他們能夠大規模生產自己的AI晶片。」

太空資料中心會是西方突破能源瓶頸解方?

在訪談中,馬斯克也表示,太空資料中心是西方國家突破能源及冷卻瓶頸的管道。他指出,「一旦我們透過太空中的AI資料中心解決了電力限制,那麼中國以外(西方)的限制就又會重新回到晶片上。」

SpaceX的長期目標,是將星艦達到「不到一小時發射一次」的超高頻率。若發射成本隨之下降,星艦可能為太空資料中心提供運輸能力,進一步串連SpaceX的航太基礎設施與AI業務
