Bill Gates Warns: Tax System Encourages "Replacing Humans with Machines" In his lengthy article, "The turbulent AI era is here," Gates lists three risks: the evaporation of jobs for Generation Z, the potential for greater harm from malicious actors, and hindered child development. He reiterates his long-advocated core solution: taxing robots and AI tokens (the basic units for model text processing and commonly used for API pricing). Gates writes, "Right now, if you're an employer, you pay taxes on the wages of the person you hire; but buying a robot can usually be immediately listed as an operating expense. The tax system is guiding you towards replacing humans with machines." The purpose of this tax is twofold: "Taxation can slightly slow the exodus of human labor and raise funds for retraining and a stronger social safety net." Gates also warns that if AI massively replaces human labor, government income tax revenue will decline, making funding a real issue. In an interview, Jensen Huang stated frankly that his differences with Gates lay not only in their judgments but also in their solutions: "What I see is very, very different, so my solutions will also be somewhat different." He appealed to historical experience: "Looking back at history, whenever a revolutionary technology emerges, incredible progress follows." He also rejected the notion that "increased productivity equals layoffs": "When companies are more productive, they don't lay off employees; they hire more." He explained that the reason is that the vast majority of companies in the world have growth ambitions: "When companies are more productive and more profitable, we can invest more and pursue more growth." His conclusion contradicted Gates': "Overall, this will be an unprecedented net job creator." However, he also acknowledged the real impact: "Everyone's job will change; some jobs will be eliminated, and many new jobs will be created."
